She was a big fan of musical theatre, and in high school, there was a new musical out on Broadway called, "Rent." From what she'd heard about it, she felt strongly that she didn't want to have any interest in it. Thus, when a group of friends announced they were planning to see the Natn'l tour of it playing in L.A., she not only turned down the invitation, but she lectured her then-boyfriend about how & why he shouldn't go either. He went anyway (as he should) and came back raving about the experience. She was surprised how she felt more hurt by the envy than the so-called "betrayal." Of course, she didn't admit that to him.
*chew, chew, chew, gulp*
Not much later, maybe 3 years, this same girl was doing a performing stint in Japan. As she was sitting in the green room in between shows, she was chatting with some fellow cast members while they all ate their lunch. One of the cast mates pulled out an avocado. The girl crinkled up her nose and, being the dope that she was, exclaimed, "Ew! I hate avocados! Are you just going to eat it plain?!"
The cast mate replied, "No. Of course not. But it tastes really good on Saltines."
The girl exclaimed, "Gross! That is so sick!"
Another cast mate, suspicious of the overreaction, questioned, "Have you ever even tasted an avocado?"
The girl recoiled. No. "Um... maybe not."
"'Maybe not'?!"
"... no."
"Then how do you know you don't like them?"

After another ten minutes of a losing battle (due to an obvious invalid argument) the girl finally tried a small slice of avocado on a saltine cracker.
She ended up buying a pack of 4 at a small convenience store on the way home from work that day. It took a few months before she had the courage to pack one in her lunch. When she did, her cast mates (deservedly) took the opportunity to say a few things before finally letting it slide and allowing her to eat in peace.
*chew, chew, chew... digest"
You would thing this girl would learn her opinionated lesson.
Wrong.
Recently, a book came out. And then 4 of these books came out. As well as movies of these books. And t-shirts & bumper stickers & pens & ... pretty much anything that one could imagine. The obsession this book created was amusing to her. So much so, that she found herself mocking it and the people who loved it. She swore, despite enjoying to read, that she would never read these books. She was disgusted by the hype and verbally made that clear whenever getting the chance. She even made fun of friends who had fallen into its ridiculous clutches.
After fighting it for over two years and listening to a couple of well-meaning and at least seemingly intelligent friends, the girl was lent the book (for free - one of the stipulations).
When she'd already found a glaringly obvious grammatical error on page 9 (page 9?! Come ON, people!), she debated putting the book down and moving on with her happy, vampire-less life. But the kids were asleep. It was a nice, cool night. She was comfortable on the couch. It had been ages since she'd read an actual book about anything other than parenting. So she continued.

Over 300 pages later, she decided she'd better go to sleep...
... and 1 day later, she found herself knocking on the door of one of the friends she'd mocked, a teenage girl from her ward, asking for book #2, with an apologetic and sheepish expression on her face.
... and one of the only reasons she's actually capable of writing this blog at the moment (and not reading) is because the owner of these books isn't out of school yet, and so she has to wait another hour to obtain book #3.
*chew, chew, chew.... cough, choke, swallow*
Crow is not my favorite fowl... can't I just stick to chicken...?

Hmm... I really love those first two, but I, like until-recently-you, have completely refused the last one. Hmm.
I feel threatened, somehow.
I love it! Welcome to the dark side my friend. When you're done with the vampires, read Hunger Games and Catching Fire (the sequel).
You're funny Tiff. I'm a fan of Rent and I couldn't live without Avocados, but I'm not a big fan of Twilight. The stories have some highlights, but the writing and story lines are painful. I'm listened to most of all of the books but get annoyed at how much gushing there is over Edwards looks... especially in book one. :) I'm glad that you like them, it's always fun to get wrapped up in a book you like.
That's hilarious! I was the same way about the Harry Potter books, actually. Even as a fifth grade teacher whose students were all reading them and thus SHOULD want to know what they were all into, I refused because it seemed like the "trendy" thing to do. Yeah, well, I eventually ate crow, too. ;) Those Twilight books ARE addictive, huh?
oh not you too!
Maybe, like with avocados, you need to learn to like the taste. It's not so bad, once you get used to it. Or, maybe you might want to read James 3 once in a while. I was determined not to read Harry Potter, but DeAnne gave me the set, so once I ran out of things to read so I picked up the first volume... kept me occupied for a few weeks. I did see a comment about Hunger Games, which I also enjoyed, but DeAnne suggested I not read the sequel. Anyway, have fun! We love you!
You make me happy. The end.
HAHAHAHAHA!! This is such a great post. I love all these stories. I'm the same way about certain things - I refuse them and mock them, and then eventually give in and end up loving them. (Harry Potter, for instance.) I'm glad you're reading Twilight, but I have to admit, I still think the first book is my favorite. (And I love Rent, too... but don't tell anyone!!)
I remember the avocado thing!! In fact, did you know that because you started eating avocados and saltines, I became an avocado fanatic? Do you remember when we dropped an overripe one off our floor to watch it splatter? Ahh...memories....
Oh and Twilight is kinda in the middle for me. I love the story, but the writing has made me laugh (or gag) out loud on more than one occasion. I think the movies are better than the books because they don't have to gush about Edward's chiseled diamond chest and honey/hazel/azure eyes for pages, so we can move on to the plot. Also, Bella seems less desperate in the movie than the books. So I'm excited for the film, but I couldn't get past book 2.
I also don't like Edward...I married someone who's more of a Jacob (and love it!), so I found it hard to get into Bella's romantic obsession. I'm done now.
I like the one Rent song I've listened to. I should branch out to the rest. I really like avacados, but admit they're more of an "adult" food. I don't really like the Twilight series. I stopped reading at the baseball game. Maybe I should give it another try. Crow banquet, anyone?
I was the same way about the twilight series, mocked it for a long time before giving in. Now I love them! Sure, Stephenie Meyer is not the greatest author by far, but they are light-hearted and entertaining at the least!
I'm the same way. Usually I start liking something after it's not cool anymore. Like flared jeans. I made fun of my sister so much when she started wearing them like 10+ years ago...Now I'm still wearing them (don't think I'll ever quite pick up on the skinny jean thing though....) And it took me a while to read Twilight too. But then I read them in like a day each. I don't even know what Javi was doing then. I think he was still taking a few naps back then. :) Love it.
